What Is RSV?
Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a common respiratory virus that can cause cold-like symptoms in adults but may lead to serious illness in infants, especially during the first few months of life. Vaccination during pregnancy can help protect your baby by passing protective antibodies from you to your infant before birth.
This added protection can help reduce the risk of severe RSV illness, hospitalization, and complications during a baby’s most vulnerable early months.
Why RSV Prevention During Pregnancy Matters
RSV is one of the leading causes of lower respiratory tract infections in infants and young children. While many babies recover from RSV without complications, some develop more serious illnesses such as bronchiolitis (inflammation and swelling of the small airways in the lungs) or pneumonia (a lung infection) that may require emergency care or hospitalization.
Infants younger than 6 months of age are at particularly high risk of severe RSV infection because their immune systems are still developing. During the fall and winter respiratory virus season, RSV contributes to a significant number of pediatric healthcare visits and hospital admissions across Ontario each year.
Vaccination during pregnancy has emerged as an important strategy to help protect newborns during the first months of life. By receiving the vaccine during the recommended stage of pregnancy, antibodies can be transferred to your baby before birth, providing protection during a period when infants are most vulnerable to severe RSV disease.
For many expectant parents, RSV prevention has become an important part of prenatal healthcare alongside other recommended vaccines that help protect both parent and baby.
How Our Pharmacists Can Help
Our pharmacists can provide personalized consultations to help you understand RSV prevention options during pregnancy and determine whether vaccination may be appropriate for you. During your consultation, we’ll review your stage of pregnancy, discuss current recommendations, answer your questions, and help you make an informed decision based on your individual circumstances.
In Ontario, pharmacists can assess eligible patients and, when appropriate, prescribe and administer RSV vaccines without requiring a doctor’s referral or a separate medical appointment. This allows you to access timely preventive care directly through Wellness Point Pharmacy in a convenient and comfortable setting.
We understand that making healthcare decisions during pregnancy can feel overwhelming. Our pharmacists are available to discuss vaccine safety, effectiveness, timing, potential side effects, and how maternal vaccination helps to protect your newborn. We take the time to provide clear, evidence-based information so you can feel confident in your healthcare choices.
If RSV vaccination is not appropriate for your situation, or if additional medical guidance is needed, we will ensure that you receive the appropriate follow-up care and support.
