Shingles Treatment

Pharmacist assessment and treatment support for shingles symptoms and painful rash concerns.

What Is Shingles?

Shingles is a painful rash caused by the reactivation of the virus that causes chickenpox. If you’ve had chickenpox in the past, the virus remains inactive in your body and can reactivate years later, resulting in shingles.

Shingles typically appears as a band or patch of painful, blistering rash on only one side of the body or face. Many people experience burning, tingling, itching, or pain before the rash develops.

Early treatment can reduce the severity of symptoms and risk of complications.

Why Shingles Matters

Shingles can affect anyone who has previously had chickenpox, but it becomes more common as people get older. Adults over the age of 50 and individuals with weakened immune systems are at greater risk of developing the condition. While shingles often resolves within a few weeks, it can cause significant discomfort and may interfere with daily activities, sleep, and overall quality of life.

One of the most common complications of shingles is persistent nerve pain, known as postherpetic neuralgia (PHN), which can continue for months or even years after the rash has healed. In some cases, shingles can also affect the eyes, ears, or other areas of the body, potentially leading to more serious health concerns if not assessed promptly.

Shingles is a common condition, with approximately 1 in 3 Canadians expected to develop shingles during their lifetime. The risk increases with age, making timely recognition and treatment especially important for older adults.

How Our Pharmacists Can Help

If you think you may have shingles, our pharmacists can assess your symptoms and determine whether treatment may be appropriate. At Wellness Point Pharmacy, pharmacists can provide care for shingles without requiring a doctor’s referral or a separate medical appointment in many situations.

During your assessment, we’ll ask about your symptoms, when they started, and whether you’ve noticed any rash, blisters, pain, or other concerns. If appropriate, a pharmacist may prescribe antiviral medication to help reduce the severity and duration of shingles. These medications work best when started as early as possible, ideally within the first few days after symptoms begin.

Our pharmacists can also recommend products and strategies to help manage discomfort, itching, and pain while the rash heals. If your symptoms suggest a more serious condition or require additional medical attention, we will help ensure you receive the appropriate follow-up care as quickly as possible.

Because shingles treatment is most effective when started early, it is important not to wait if you suspect you may have symptoms. Prompt assessment can make a meaningful difference in your recovery and help reduce the risk of long-term complications.
