Hepatitis A Prevention

Hepatitis A vaccine guidance and food and water safety advice before international travel.

What Is Hepatitis A?

Hepatitis A is a viral infection that affects the liver. It is usually spread through contaminated food or water, or by close contact with an infected person, and can cause symptoms such as fever, fatigue, nausea, abdominal pain, and jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes).

Why Hepatitis A Prevention Matters

Hepatitis A is one of the most common vaccine-preventable illnesses affecting international travellers. Whilst the risk is higher in many parts of Africa, Asia, Central and South America, and the Middle East, travellers can also be exposed in destinations where they may not expect the virus to be present. Even staying in quality accommodations or eating at reputable restaurants does not completely eliminate the risk.

Travellers visiting friends and relatives may be at increased risk because they often stay for longer periods, eat home-prepared meals, or spend more time in local communities where exposure may occur. However, hepatitis A can affect any traveller, regardless of the purpose or style of travel.

Each year, cases of hepatitis A are reported across Canada, with many linked to international travel. Hepatitis A can cause an illness that lasts for several weeks or even months, disrupting both your trip and your recovery after you return home. Most people recover completely, although recovery can take time. In rare cases, hepatitis A can lead to severe liver complications, particularly in older adults and those with existing liver disease.

Unlike many travel-related illnesses, hepatitis A is easily prevented through vaccination. The vaccine provides excellent protection and is recommended for most travellers visiting countries where hepatitis A is more common. Good hand hygiene combined with careful food and water choices can further reduce your risk, but vaccination remains the most effective way to prevent infection.

The level of risk depends on your destination, the length and purpose of your trip, your planned activities, and your medical history. Whether you are travelling for business, leisure, volunteer work, or to visit family and friends, taking steps to prevent hepatitis A before you leave can help reduce your risk of illness during and after your trip.
