Meningococcal Disease Prevention

Meningococcal vaccine guidance for travel, school, pilgrimage, or outbreak-related requirements.

What Is Meningococcal Disease?

Meningococcal disease is a serious bacterial infection caused by Neisseria meningitidis. It can lead to meningitis (infection of the lining around the brain and spinal cord) or a severe bloodstream infection, both of which require urgent medical treatment.

Why Meningococcal Disease Prevention Matters

Meningococcal disease is uncommon, but it can progress rapidly and become life-threatening within a short period of time. Cases of meningococcal disease occur in Canada each year, but the risk for travellers varies depending on their destination, planned activities, and the reason for travel.

Certain parts of the world have a higher risk of meningococcal disease, particularly countries within the “meningitis belt” of sub-Saharan Africa, where outbreaks occur more frequently during the dry season. Travellers may also be at increased risk when staying in crowded settings, such as student residences, military accommodations, or large gatherings where close contact with others is common.

Vaccination is strongly recommended for travellers visiting areas where meningococcal disease is more common or where proof of vaccination is required for entry. Saudi Arabia, for instance, requires proof of meningococcal vaccination for individuals travelling for Hajj or Umrah, making it an important part of pre-travel planning for many pilgrims. Travellers working in healthcare, volunteering in affected regions, or living in close-contact settings may also be at increased risk.

Symptoms of meningococcal disease often begin suddenly and may include fever, severe headache, neck stiffness, nausea, vomiting, sensitivity to light, or a rash. Early recognition and prompt medical attention are critical, as meningococcal disease can worsen very quickly. Vaccination remains the most effective way to prevent meningococcal disease in travellers at increased risk.

Not everyone requires meningococcal vaccination before travelling. Recommendations depend on your destination, length of stay, planned activities, medical history, previous vaccinations, and any entry requirements for your destination. Some travellers may require vaccination because of where they are travelling, while others may need it because of the type of activities they have planned. Reviewing your travel plans before you leave helps ensure you receive recommendations that are appropriate for your specific trip.
