Travellers' Diarrhea Prevention

Traveller's diarrhea prevention advice, food and water safety, and destination-specific risk guidance.

What Is Travellers’ Diarrhea?

Travellers’ diarrhea is one of the most common illnesses affecting people travelling internationally. It is usually caused by bacteria, viruses, or parasites found in contaminated food or water and can lead to symptoms such as diarrhea, stomach cramps, nausea, vomiting, and fever.

Why Travellers’ Diarrhea Prevention Matters

Travellers’ diarrhea can affect anyone, regardless of age or travel experience. It is particularly common when travelling to parts of Asia, Africa, the Middle East, Central and South America, where food and water safety standards may differ from those in Canada. Even experienced travellers can become ill, making prevention an important part of preparing for your trip.

Travellers’ diarrhea can quickly disrupt your travel plans and leave you feeling unwell whilst away from home. Symptoms can range from mild discomfort to more severe illness, particularly in young children, older adults, pregnant individuals, and people with weakened immune systems or certain underlying medical conditions. Staying well hydrated is especially important, as diarrhea and vomiting can lead to dehydration.

Careful food and water choices remain the best way to reduce your risk. Drinking bottled or appropriately treated water, avoiding raw or undercooked foods, choosing food that is freshly prepared and served hot, and practising good hand hygiene can all help lower your chances of becoming ill. However, even travellers who are careful with what they eat and drink may still develop travellers’ diarrhea.

The level of risk varies depending on your destination, the length and purpose of your trip, your planned activities, and your underlying health conditions. Some travellers may also benefit from carrying medications to manage symptoms or treat more severe illness if it develops. Discussing these options before you travel can help ensure you are prepared should illness occur while you are away.

Most episodes improve without complications, but severe diarrhea, persistent vomiting, bloody stools, high fever, or signs of dehydration require prompt medical attention. Knowing when to seek medical care is just as important as knowing how to reduce your risk before you travel.
