What Is Influenza?
Influenza, commonly known as the flu, is a contagious viral infection that affects the nose, throat, and lungs. Unlike the common cold, influenza often develops suddenly and can cause fever, chills, cough, sore throat, muscle aches, headaches, and significant fatigue.
Most people recover from influenza within one to two weeks, but some are at greater risk of serious complications. This includes older adults, young children, pregnant individuals, and people with certain chronic medical conditions.
Why Influenza Matters
Influenza circulates every year in Ontario, with cases increasing during the fall and winter months. The virus spreads easily through respiratory droplets when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or talks, making it common for influenza to spread within households, schools, workplaces, and the community.
Many people mistake influenza for a common cold or assume that treatment is limited to rest and fluids. While supportive care is an important part of recovery, some people may benefit from antiviral medication if treatment is started early in the course of illness. Annual vaccination also remains the most effective way to reduce your risk of influenza and its complications.
Recognizing influenza early allows you to receive the most appropriate advice, understand whether treatment may be beneficial, and take practical steps to help protect those around you.
How Our Pharmacists Can Help
Our pharmacists can assess your symptoms to help determine whether they are most consistent with influenza or another respiratory illness. We’ll take the time to understand when your symptoms began, review your medical history, discuss any risk factors for complications, and recommend the most appropriate next steps based on your individual situation.
Depending on your assessment, we may recommend supportive care, over-the-counter medications to help relieve symptoms, or prescribe antiviral treatment when appropriate. We can also provide influenza vaccination for eligible individuals and answer your questions about preventing influenza, protecting family members, and reducing the spread of infection.
If your symptoms suggest that additional medical assessment is needed or fall outside the scope of pharmacist management, we’ll help ensure you receive prompt follow-up with the appropriate healthcare provider. Our pharmacists are also available to provide ongoing support if your symptoms change or do not improve as expected.
