What Are Warts?
Warts are small, non-cancerous skin growths caused by certain types of the human papillomavirus (HPV). They can develop on many areas of the body, but the most common types seen in the pharmacy are common warts (verruca vulgaris), which often appear on the hands and fingers, and plantar warts, which develop on the soles of the feet.
Most warts are harmless, but they can become painful, spread to other areas of the body, or affect your confidence, depending on their size and location.
Why Warts Develop
Warts develop when HPV enters the skin through tiny cuts or breaks, causing the outer layer of the skin to grow more quickly than normal. The virus is spread through direct contact with infected skin or contaminated surfaces, although not everyone who comes into contact with the virus develops a wart. Children, teenagers, and people with weakened immune systems may be more likely to develop warts, but they can occur at any age.
One of the challenges with warts is that they often change very slowly. Some disappear on their own, while others persist for months or even years without treatment. Many other skin conditions can resemble a wart, therefore it is important to confirm what you are treating before starting therapy. An accurate assessment can help ensure you choose the most appropriate treatment and avoid unnecessary time, expense, and frustration.
How Our Pharmacists Can Help
Our pharmacists can assess your skin lesion and help determine whether it is most consistent with a common wart or plantar wart that can be managed in the pharmacy. We’ll take the time to understand your symptoms, review your medical history, and recommend the most appropriate treatment based on your individual needs.
Depending on your assessment, we may recommend self-care measures, over-the-counter treatments, or prescription medication when appropriate. We will explain how to use your treatment correctly, discuss how long treatment may take, and provide practical advice to improve the likelihood of successful wart removal while helping reduce the risk of spreading the virus to others.
If your symptoms suggest that additional medical assessment is needed or if the lesion is not suitable for pharmacist management, we’ll help ensure you receive the appropriate follow-up care. Our pharmacists are also available to answer your questions and provide support throughout your treatment.
