Oral Thrush

Pharmacist support for white patches or soreness in the mouth.

What Is Oral Thrush?

Oral thrush, also known as candidal stomatitis, is a fungal infection of the mouth caused by an overgrowth of a yeast called Candida. It commonly appears as creamy white patches on the tongue, inside the cheeks, roof of the mouth, or throat and may cause soreness, a cotton-like feeling in the mouth, changes in taste, or discomfort when eating or swallowing.

Oral thrush can be straightforward to treat, particularly when it is identified early and the underlying cause is addressed.

Why Oral Thrush Happens

Oral thrush can affect people of all ages, but it is more common in infants, older adults, individuals who wear dentures, people with diabetes, those using inhaled corticosteroids, or anyone with a weakened immune system. It can also develop after taking antibiotics, which may reduce the normal bacteria that help keep yeast growth under control.

Many people first notice white patches or mouth discomfort and assume the symptoms will resolve on their own. Others may try mouth rinses or over-the-counter products without knowing whether the problem is caused by a fungal infection or another condition. Several conditions can cause symptoms similar to oral thrush, making a proper assessment important to ensure the most appropriate treatment is chosen.

Most uncomplicated cases of oral thrush respond well to antifungal treatment. Early assessment can help relieve symptoms, promote healing, and identify contributing factors that may help reduce the risk of future infections.

How Our Pharmacists Can Help

Our pharmacists can assess your symptoms and help determine whether they are consistent with oral thrush or another condition affecting the mouth. During your consultation, we’ll take the time to understand your symptoms, review your health history, and identify any factors that may be contributing to your condition.

Rather than selecting a product on your own, we will recommend the most appropriate treatment based on your individual needs. Depending on your assessment, this may include self-care advice, over-the-counter products, or prescription antifungal medication when appropriate. We will also explain how to use your treatment correctly and discuss practical measures that may help reduce the chance of the infection returning.

If your symptoms suggest that additional medical assessment is needed, or if they do not improve as expected, we’ll help ensure you receive the appropriate follow-up care.

Personalized Care for a Healthier Mouth

Oral thrush can make everyday activities such as eating, drinking, and speaking uncomfortable, but effective treatment is available. Receiving the right assessment early can help you feel better sooner while reducing the risk of ongoing irritation or recurrent infection.

At Wellness Point Pharmacy, our pharmacists provide personalized care in a welcoming and respectful environment. We’ll take the time to understand your symptoms, answer your questions, and recommend treatment options that are appropriate for your individual situation.

Our goal is not only to treat the current infection but also to help identify factors that may have contributed to its development. By addressing these underlying factors, we can help reduce the likelihood of future episodes and support your long-term oral health.
