Urinary Tract Infection

Pharmacist support for uncomplicated urinary tract infection symptoms.

What Is a Urinary Tract Infection?

A urinary tract infection (UTI) is a bacterial infection that most commonly affects the bladder. It can cause symptoms such as a burning sensation when urinating, the frequent or urgent need to urinate, lower abdominal discomfort, or cloudy or strong-smelling urine.

UTIs are common and can usually be treated effectively when identified early.

Why Urinary Tract Infections Occur

UTIs can occur in people of all ages and genders, although they are more common in women because of differences in urinary tract anatomy. A range of factors can increase the risk of developing a UTI, including sexual activity, pregnancy, menopause, certain medical conditions, and urinary tract abnormalities. Whilst some people experience only one infection, others may develop recurrent UTIs.

The symptoms of a bladder infection are often recognizable, particularly for someone who has experienced a UTI before. However, similar symptoms can sometimes be caused by other conditions, and not every urinary symptom requires the same treatment. Determining whether your symptoms are consistent with a UTI is an important first step toward choosing the most appropriate treatment.

Timely treatment can help relieve discomfort, shorten the duration of symptoms, and reduce the risk of the infection progressing or becoming more complicated.

How Our Pharmacists Can Help

Our pharmacists can assess your symptoms and determine whether they are consistent with an uncomplicated UTI that can be managed in the pharmacy. We’ll take the time to understand your symptoms, review your medical history, and recommend the most appropriate treatment based on your individual needs.

Depending on your assessment, we may recommend self-care measures, over-the-counter products to help relieve symptoms, or prescribe antibiotic treatment when appropriate. We will explain how to take your medication correctly, discuss what you can expect during recovery, and provide practical advice to help support urinary health and reduce the risk of future infections.

If your assessment suggests that additional medical evaluation is needed or your symptoms fall outside the scope of pharmacist management, we’ll help ensure you receive prompt follow-up with the appropriate healthcare provider. Our pharmacists are also available to answer your questions and provide ongoing support if your symptoms do not improve as expected.

Personalized Care When You Need It Most

UTIs can develop suddenly and quickly become disruptive to your daily routine. Simple activities such as working, sleeping, travelling, or exercising may become uncomfortable while symptoms persist. Having timely access to assessment and treatment can help you feel better sooner and give you confidence that you’re receiving the right care.

At Wellness Point Pharmacy, we provide confidential, compassionate care in a welcoming environment. Our pharmacists will listen to your concerns, explain your treatment options in clear language, and work with you to develop a plan that fits your individual needs.

Our goal is not only to treat your current infection but also to help you recognize ways to reduce the likelihood of future UTIs and understand when additional medical care may be needed.
