Vaginal Yeast Infection

Pharmacist support for vaginal itching, irritation, and yeast infection symptoms.

What Is a Vaginal Yeast Infection?

A vaginal yeast infection is a common fungal infection caused by an overgrowth of Candida, a type of yeast that naturally lives in the body. It often causes itching, irritation, redness, and a thick white vaginal discharge, although symptoms can vary from person to person.

Whilst vaginal yeast infections are usually not serious, they can be uncomfortable and have a significant impact on your daily comfort and quality of life.

Why Vaginal Yeast Infections Occur

Many women will experience a vaginal yeast infection at some point in their lives. They can develop when the natural balance of bacteria and yeast in the vagina is disrupted, allowing yeast to multiply. Common contributing factors include antibiotic use, pregnancy, diabetes, hormonal changes, and a weakened immune system. In some cases, however, vaginal yeast infections develop without an obvious cause.

Symptoms such as itching, burning, and unusual vaginal discharge can occur with several different vaginal conditions, making it difficult to know the underlying cause without an assessment. You may gravitate towards choosing an over-the-counter antifungal product based on previous experience, but similar symptoms can also be caused by conditions that require a different approach to treatment. Speaking with a pharmacist can help ensure you receive the most appropriate treatment for your symptoms from the outset.

The right treatment can often provide prompt relief and help you return to your normal daily activities more comfortably. Identifying the cause of your symptoms early also helps avoid unnecessary treatment and ensures that additional medical care is arranged when needed.

How Our Pharmacists Can Help

Our pharmacists can assess your symptoms and help determine whether they are most consistent with an uncomplicated vaginal yeast infection or whether another cause should be considered. We’ll take the time to understand your symptoms, review your medical history, and recommend the most appropriate treatment based on your individual needs.

Depending on your assessment, we may recommend over-the-counter antifungal products or prescribe treatment when appropriate. We will explain how to use your medication correctly, discuss what you can expect during recovery, and provide practical advice to help reduce the risk of future infections.

If your symptoms suggest that additional medical assessment is needed or fall outside the scope of pharmacist management, we’ll help ensure you receive the appropriate follow-up care. Our pharmacists are also available to answer your questions and provide ongoing support if your symptoms do not improve as expected.

Personalized Care in a Comfortable, Confidential Setting

We understand that vaginal symptoms can feel personal or difficult to discuss. Our pharmacists provide care in a respectful, professional, and confidential environment where you can speak openly about your concerns and receive advice without judgment.

Our goal is to help you feel better as quickly as possible while ensuring you receive treatment that’s appropriate for your symptoms. We’ll answer your questions, explain your options clearly, and help you feel confident managing your condition and knowing when additional care may be needed.
