Ringworm

Pharmacist support for ringworm and fungal skin infection concerns.

What Is Ringworm?

Ringworm, also known as tinea corporis, is a common fungal infection of the skin. Despite its name, it is not caused by a worm. It typically appears as a red, circular or ring-shaped rash with a slightly raised edge that may be itchy and gradually spread over time.

Ringworm can develop almost anywhere on the body, but it most commonly affects the arms, legs, trunk, and neck.

Why Ringworm Develops

Ringworm is caused by a group of fungi called dermatophytes that thrive in warm, moist environments. The infection can spread through direct skin-to-skin contact with an infected person or animal, by sharing personal items such as towels or clothing, or through contact with contaminated surfaces. It can affect people of any age, but it is more common in those who participate in contact sports, use shared locker rooms or gyms, or have frequent close contact with pets.

Since many skin rashes can look alike, it is not always obvious whether a rash is caused by a fungal infection. Conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, or other types of dermatitis may appear similar but require very different treatment. Choosing the wrong cream can sometimes make symptoms worse or delay healing, making it worthwhile to have the rash assessed before starting treatment.

With an accurate diagnosis and the right treatment, most cases of ringworm improve successfully. Addressing the infection early can also help reduce the risk of it spreading to other parts of the body or to other people.

How Our Pharmacists Can Help

Our pharmacists can assess your symptoms and help determine whether your rash is most consistent with ringworm or another skin condition. We’ll take the time to understand your symptoms, review your medical history, and recommend the most appropriate treatment based on your individual needs.

Depending on your assessment, we may recommend self-care measures, over-the-counter antifungal products, or prescription medication when appropriate. We will explain how to use your treatment correctly, discuss how long treatment should be continued, and provide practical advice to help reduce the risk of spreading the infection or experiencing another episode in the future.

If your symptoms suggest that additional medical assessment is needed or if the rash is not improving as expected, we’ll help ensure you receive the appropriate follow-up care. Our pharmacists are also available to answer your questions and provide support throughout your recovery.

Personalized Care for Healthy Skin

A persistent rash can be frustrating, particularly when it continues to spread or does not improve with self-treatment. Receiving the right advice early can help you start effective treatment with confidence and avoid unnecessary trial and error.

Our pharmacists will take the time to assess your symptoms, explain your treatment options, and recommend practical steps to support healing and help prevent the infection from returning.

Our goal is to help you recover as quickly and comfortably as possible while providing the knowledge and support you need to care for your skin with confidence.
